How do you advertise a website?
It's not like you can walk around wearing a sandwich board - well, I suppose you can if you have a webcam.
A while ago I was asked to help out gathering news and articles for a website Divorce and Back. It's a great source of information and support for anyone going through the divorce process but it's been a slow process getting it off the ground.
Although it caters primarily for people living in Australia and New Zealand it's a global subject. Divorce is pretty naff wherever you live after all.
So how is it some sites are bouncing while others just muddle along? What does it take (apart from getting Google to sit up and take notice) to get people interested?
If you were going through a divorce and looking for advice and support, what would you be looking for in an internet site? Or, if you were me and trying to get people's attention - how would you go about it?

Word of mouth works best. I have found leaving comments on other blogs of like minded people has been building up friendships that work better than Blog Explosion.
Build up an email list. (NOT spamming but friends) and periodically send out notices and ask them to forward it to their friends. If the notices are interesting and people consider the info of value they could travel the world several times over.
Google the subject (in this case divorce) and see how other sites are doing. Follow the example of the best of what they offer and add your own personality to it.

Thank you. Interesting tips, I'll take them on board.

When I was looking to get a divorce, I did a search for the laws in my state. I also looked for boards/forums so that I could possibly find others going through divorce under the same type or circumstances. Maybe get your link on some forums.
Hope it helps, even a little!
Peace

Thank you, this is all helpful. There is plenty of content at D&B and we're adding to it all the time. There is also a forum but that's where things are slow right now. I suppose it's a difficult subject to share with strangers, although for me that would probably make it easier.

Trends are trends... not explainable. Persistence is a big part of it, also covering something no one else does.
Then again, my blog is way down on the viewers, so who am I to give advice?
