The Worth of a Man

I got my new Child Benefit order through today. For anyone outside the UK, that's a paltry sum the government gives all parents/carers toward the upkeep of a child/children. Currently it stands at £17 a week. Wouldn't even buy half a pair of shoes (or as some would say, one shoe).

Ah but... I am also a sad, lonely, unmarriable woman so I get lone parent benefit on top. Wow!

This currently stands at 55p per week (about 25 cents). So there you have it guys, that's what the government of this sceptred isle think you're worth. Wouldn't stand for it if I were you ;-)

So are you saying you had a child you can't afford to raise? Not sure I understand why you are whining.

Nope, I think you missed the point there. If I have to spell it out -

It's bizarre that this govt thinks a lone parent needs an additional 55p a week toward the cost of raising a child, as though it's some kind of compensation for a second parent.

Where was the whining btw?

Mail em a copy of the guide Liz and tell em you've followed it religiously so surely you deserve more :)

I'm confused, while I agree that the money is pretty small, why is the government giving it to you at all? For having a kid?

In the US we used to do that with welfare, you had a kid, here is a certain amount of money for you and the kid to live on. Have another kid, here is some more money. The money was small (not as small as your amount) but somehow 'moms' managed to live on it. Finally we got tired of the women doing nothing but having kids to make more money and started demanding that short of some verifiable physical or mental disability, they had X amount of time to find work (we still subsidized lots of crap like day care, etc. for them) but they had to find a job and work.

The government doesn't owe anyone anything just because they had a kid. The amount is so small that the UK is giving you, that they should discontinue it all together and put that amount into one of the other social program fiascos that the socialist government of the UK has.

This is not welfare, as such, that's another thing entirely. Child Benefit is a sum paid for every child in this country to married or single parents whether working or not. In fact, you have a legal responsibility to claim Child Benefit. Although I'm single, I work, in fact I'm pretty well paid. I'm not sitting at home having babies to get more welfare but I am bringing my kids up alone.

The whole point of my post was simply to question the difference between the amount a lone parent receives to that of a married couple and to wonder what that is based on. And, no, I'm not whining, just pointing out the irony....
